Know the Warning Signs

Teach your parent one simple rule that defeats most of them: no real bank, agency, or family member will ever ask for gift cards or demand secrecy. If a call creates panic and pressure, that panic is the scam.
Have the Conversation Without Shame
Approach this as teamwork, not a lecture. Agree on a family “safe word” that any real relative can use in an emergency. Tell your parent it is completely fine to hang up on anyone and call you back, and that you will never be angry about a hang-up. Scammers rely on embarrassment to keep victims quiet, so removing the shame is itself protection.
